Peetus Excavatum

Abstract
Pectus excavatum, funnel chest and chone-chondrosternon are all terms applied to a malformation of the anterior chest which consists of depression of the lower sternum. The lesion is usually congenital, being noted shortely after birth, and it may be progressive in degree until skeletal maturity is reached.
The etiology of pectus excavatum is not established, but there is the suggestion that there occurs an overgrowth of costal cartilage that forces the sternum recede, and that under the influence of the diaphragm it is pulled posteriorly.
Pectus excavatum is usually asymptomatic lesion but a minority of patients have symptoms including cardiac and ventilation impairment. Awareness of a funnel chest deformity, particularly in the female, may lead to an abnormal shyness and withdrawal from social activity.
The indication for operation is based on cosmetic, physiologic and orthopedic considerations. The risk of an operative mortality would be negliable and the result of the operation is dramatic.
The purpose of this paper is to present a case of pectus excavatum which have been treated surgically for the first time in this hospital, and clinical review of the deformity.
